What are the pre-procedure instructions before getting a tattoo?
- Hydrate: Dehydration can make you feel faint during your appointment.
- Avoid Alcohol and Drugs: Please do not drink alcohol, take unprescribed drugs or consume high quantities of caffeine 24 hours prior to and after the tattoo.
- Eat well: Eating a balanced meal before your appointment gives you the energy you need to get through your tattoo. Your body needs fuel for the tattoo process.
- Sleep: Get enough sleep so your body is rested for your appointment.
- Avoid certain hair removal methods: Avoid shaving to prevent cuts (2 weeks), tweezing (48hrs), waxing (5days), and electrolysis (2 weeks), respectively, before your appointment.
- Avoid heavy workouts: Workouts can make your muscles sore and tense, which can be uncomfortable during the tattoo process.
- Avoid sun exposure: Try to stay out of the sun for a few days before your appointment so your skin isn’t sunburned. You will need to reschedule if you’re sunburnt where the tattoo will be.
- Moisturize: Moisturize the area of your skin that will be tattooed in the days leading up to your appointment, and again on the morning of your appointment.
- Ask your Artist before applying Numbing Creams: Most numbing creams have Lidocane in them. It has been marked unsafe by the FDA in an article written in 2024 stating that high levels (more than 4%) of Lidocane can cause serious injury when used for a long period of time. Numbing creams are risky and should be avoided until further testing is done. Tattoos hurt, but the art is forever, you can get through it.
- Wear loose clothing: Wear loose-fitting, clean clothing to your appointment.
What things should I consider before getting a tattoo?
Choose quality. A great artist is someone that has worked on perfecting their craft for many ycars. Their skill means you get a quality tattoo. So choose an artist because they’re great, not because they’re cheap. And DO NOT haggle! Great art is worth paying for – especially when the canvas is your body!
Trust your artist. You’ve discussed the design, now trust your artist to do their job. Tattoo artists want to give you the best experience just as much as you want your perfect tattoo, so trust them to customize a tattoo design that represents you perfectly.
